Holi is a fun and popular spring festival in India, Hindu in origin but now celebrated by most of the population. Holi takes place over two days in late February early March. On the first day bonfires are built and lit representing the burning of the daughter of the Lord of the Demons who is thought to be responsible for causing trouble for small children. The second days celebrations are both more colourful and more practical, coloured dust from medicinal herbs and water bombs are thrown and rubbed into peoples faces in the hopes of staying healthy during the cold and flu season. If you’re in India for Holi and people throw water and coloured dust at you it is actually a friendly gesture wishing you good health. People also prepare a special cannabis drink called bhang, which may be why they’re so happy to be hit by water bombs. Holi is also an occasion for families to get together to have a big meal together.
