The Hidar Zion festival celebrates the Church of St Mary, in which the arc of the covenant is supposedly housed, and is a festival specific to Axum. A feverish combination of poverty and devotion lend itself to this memorable day. I was there last year and of 15,000 pilgrims in the small town there were possibly 5 other foreign faces - truly unique and not to be missed if possible.
