Golden Shears
See more Festivals. See best of North Island in New Zealand.

You may think you’re not particularly interested in seeing sheep shorn quickly but the New Zealand’s Golden Shears competition will probably surprise you. The sheep are caught, thrown around by skilled hands and shorn in less than 60 seconds. Before television showed sporting events, this was one of the most popular event in New Zealand and you had to get your tickets a year in advance. These days shearers have regimented training programs and fitness regimes like other professional sportsmen. The three day event covers different standards and ages from the Novice to the Open competitions and also features wool handling events, (spreading and sorting the fleece in one piece) wool pressing (packing the fleeces into bags) and the triathlon.
