See more Festivals. See best of Dublin in Ireland.

Although surrounded by a week long, glorious aura of pageants, concerts, dances and parades, the national Fleadh Cheoil is in fact a very hard-fought competition between Ireland’s most talented musicians, designed to establish the highest possible standards of musical skill through competitive performance. The festival usually lasts for around a week in August though the dates vary from year to year and there is a new host town every time it is held, but it is well worth pinning down for the evocative, unearthly quality of the traditional music. The post-competition spontaneous jamming sessions are half the fun, and often last well into the night.
