An event with a great history, the Avignon Festival is France's oldest by far, but rather than celebrating years of tradition, it exists as a forward-thinking showcase of the newest in theatrical performance. The first festival in 1947 presented Shakespeare's 'Richard II' to its French audience, amongst whom it was relatively unknown, but today it has a huge youth contingent and promotes dance and theatrical works which explore political, cultural, social and experimental themes, running for over three weeks during mid-July.
