In 1576, the Doge of Venice kept his promise to give thanks to God by building an enormous, beautiful church on the Venetian island of Giudecca if the plague that gripped the city came to an end. It did, and he paid the half-built church a visit on its consecration on the third Sunday in July of 1592 via a bridge of barges strung together from Zattere to Giudecca. The pilgrimage is still made today by hundreds of people across the floating path to Il Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore, but in a notably more lively fashion, with a colossal, hour-long firework display on the previous evening to light up the city and the myriad drifting boats, which are decked with flowers and balloons and host the local families’ picnic feasts as they await the evening’s spectacle. As the revellers disband, many head to the Lido beach in their boats to watch the summer sun rising over the City of Light.
