Bay to Breakers Race and Street Party
See more Festivals. See best of San Francisco in United States.

San Francisco's very own Mardi Gras, the Bay to Breakers event, is an odd combination of unlimited public alcohol consumption and partying in the street, paired with a 12K race. The partying and racing literally cross paths, with runners being slowed down by drunken louts who in turn are slowed down by their own alcohol consumption. 16 different bands can be found along the route, providing music to the crowds, while kegs in trolleys and bars on wheels keep the thirsty refreshed. Officially in the Guinness Book of Records as the World's Largest Footrace, the event is an unofficial costume party, with huge groups in themed outfits. Bay to Breakers is an event that highlights San Francisco's famously liberal community and brings its residents together, for the 24 hours in which (most) anything goes.
