If you aren’t quite ready to take on Ben Nevis yet, or prefer your ice climbing sites to be conveniently located near a coffee shop, then the world’s biggest indoor ice wall could be just what you need.
Located at the National Climbing Centre in Kinlochleven, Scotland, the ice wall is in fact part of an enormous indoor ice cave, made from 500 tonnes of compated snow. There are around 1,400 square metres of ice to clamber across, reaching up to 15 metres high, and incorporating every mountaineer’s challenge imagineable, from straightforward slopes to lethal overhangs and ice pinnacles.
Beginners’ ice climbing courses are held here and the site is equally useful for experienced climbers looking to perfect their techniques. Better still, it is well within reach of some of the UK’s best natural climbing sites, making it a good place to start a mountaineering adventure from.
