When the simple, boundless beauty of nature calls, it is difficult to imagine a better answer than to climb aboard your camel and make the ever-receding horizon your home for a week or two. The Tuareg people are directly descended from the feared Berber tribes of old, and their homes and lives have been entwined with this environment since the 7th Century. Their place in the modern world is a less dominant one, but their nomadic traditions are maintained and happily shared with outsiders, so as well as a traditional Berber-style tour of some of the Sahara’s most glorious sights, you are very likely to learn about traditional foods, legends, costume and customs as well as witness camel parades and races, musical performances and warrior dances. Facilities are basic and the hours of camel trekking can be exhausting, but the challenge is more than worthwhile.
