Japanese musical theatre is at once iconic and mysterious; its origins date back at least as far as the 7th century Tang Dynasty in the form of folk theatre, and its unique method of solitary rehearsal and group performance, coupled with the symbolic and spiritual themes of the productions themselves, embodies a great deal of the philosophy behind the Shinto and Buddhist religions. The storylines are often traditional ones that have been passed down as legends through generations, such ‘Hagoromo’, the story of a dancing spirit of the air, and ‘Sekidera Komachi’, a tale about a beautiful poet who learns to come to terms with her own ageing. Characters and occurrences themselves are often motifs, and every step, vocal twist, gesture and prop usage is perfected carefully and privately ready for its transient appearance on stage amongst its fellows. This wonderful tradition still survives and is performed at the National Noh Theatre in Tokyo.
