Cool contemporary hotel with holistic spa, heavenly cuisine and one of Bangkok's hippest bars

Bangkok has always been known for its first-class hotels but up until now they've always been a tad staid. No longer so with the recent opening of Christina Ong's Metropolitan (sibling to London's uber-trendy Met). Its sleek minimalist design, cool dining and top-notch service have created quite a stir. Large zen-style guestrooms feature one-off art works, Bose stereos, yoga mats and luxe limestone bathrooms. But, thankfully, this is designer style without the attitude: the staff may be kitted out in glam black uniforms by Yohji Yamamoto, but they're smiley, helpful and genuinely charming.

The hotel is located in Sathorn, the city’s upmarket business and embassy district. Bankgok's main shopping areas and Patpong's infamous nightlife are close by, but you will find it hard to leave this serene cocoon. Book one of the vast Penthouse suites, soothe away your jetlag in the Shambhala spa, lounge by the palm-lined pool, feast on divine food and people-watch in the groovy Met bar.
