Wagner upset Vienna when he left the Kunsterhaus, which had recommended him for this commission, and adopted a Secessionist mentality. Named after the flowered tile which covers the magnificent facade, at the time of its construction, it was felt to be hideous beyond measure, but no longer. There is a gradation of detail and colour from the bottom to the top with the green iron base, a gradual increase in complexity of the floral pattern from red to green toward to roof, finally capped with lion heads in relief and an elaborate overhanging eave.
