This house came after Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water in Bear Run, and Neutra was an assistant to Wright. A finest example of Modernist mid-century residential architecture, the house was conceived as the perfect summer retreat. The Desrt House is barely visible as you approach – the design such that the sizeable property maintains its privacy, despite its pool, guest wing and servants' quarters. Constructed to appear as a series of horizontal planes floating over transparent walls, the outcome is a structure of very light and transient presence. Set in such dramatic surroundings, it is fitting that Neutra maintained the basis of desert landscape in his colours and materials.
