This site opens the eyes to the world of green architecture – not only using geometry for a natural feel, but also bringing in nature to the manmade environment. Gap's planted, undulating rooftop surpasses convention with higher insulating performance. The rooftop provides thermal insulation from the sun, resulting in less air-conditioning. The rooftops are planted with a mixture of indigenous grasses and wildflowers, mimicking natural coastal grassland above layers of waterproofing material. The site's proximity to the San Francisco Airport made the decision to use a grass roof. The mass of the soil acts as an acoustic barrier to airplane noise. Excellent air circulation via underfloor air distribution (UFAD) systems. Gap's exterior glass walls admit rich natural light and views. Two-story atrium bays allow sunlight, curved light monitors reflect light into lower spaces.
