This 914ft tower was designed by Stubbins to break down the monotony of ‘the new, slick, slab buildings that march up the avenues’. Encased in alternating bands of aluminium and glass, its roof cuts a 45° angle, originally intended to harness sunlight for power, although never actualised. St. Peter's Lutheran Church occupied part of the intended site, allowing Citicorp to construct a new church in the same spot, with no connection to the Citicorp building and no columns passing through it, hence the huge and impressive 35m high columns – positioned at the centre of each façade, as opposed to the corners. This design allowed the northwest corner of the building to cantilever 22m over the new church.
