These two architects were virtually unknown at this time, and this giant, futuristic, exoskeletal arts centre raised serious issues at the time among Parisian critics and locals. Nowadays, however, Beaubourg (as it is also known) is hailed universally as a masterpiece of high-tech architecture. The structure forms a huge transparent box whose exposed frame of tubular steel columns carries trusses spanning the width of the building. The services and structure (red elevators, transparent tunnelled escalators, blue tubes for air, green water and yellow electricity tubes) are on the exterior, allowing for larger exhibition spaces, and the exterior"s rising escalators have some of the best views in Paris.
