This unique building is widely but unofficially known as La Pedrera ("the Quarry"). It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the final secular design of the Spanish surrealist Antoni Gaudi. Seen by many as a powerful and even overwhelming building, it presents itself as waves of sand or a honeycomb formation, with the roof appearing as a clay-coloured cloud, or, by some critics, an "ugly moon sitting on an ugly quarry", hence its nickname. It"s a beautiful sculptural building that expresses pure tectonic delight. Gaudi has taken stone and moulded it like lava, achieving pure drama.
