Initially constructed at the request of Louis IX as a royal chapel, Sainte Chapelle is often regarded as the definitive example of its Gothic style – that of a central building surrounded by several separate, unique chapels. The vaulted ceilings and ornate, gold-crowned columns are painted in vivid harlequin blues, reds and yellows, lit up though the wonderful rows of stained glass windows which miraculously survived the Revolution, despite the loss of over twenty relics and many tapestries.
