Palais des Papes or Palace of the Popes in Avignon is one of the largest medieval Gothic buildings in the world. The papal throne was moved to Avignon in 1309 by a newly elected pope unsure about the chaos of Rome. It took many years for building work to be considered, but the local bishops palace, perched on a rocky outcrop over looking the Rhone was given a papal re-fit. Several builds and a palace expansion later and the huge palace with its four, fortified wings centred around a central cloister was completed, its new tower and 52 metre long, high vaulted grand chapel ready to serve god, the popes and the people of Avignon. The popes left in 1377 and the palace was besieged several times an used as a military barracks and stables after which it and its ornate woodworks and mosaics begun to deteriorate. In 1906 it became a museum and has been under repair ever since.
