Conceived by Iceland’s premier architect in 1937 and brought to its final stark, icy reality in 1986, the Hallgrimskirkja dominates Reykjavik’s snowy landscape for miles around like a modern snow-queen’s palace. Both eerily naturalistic and harshly structured, the church’s main tower is the tallest in Iceland. The walls and ceiling vaults match the jagged exterior and appear like the blue-glowing inside of a hollow iceberg, and the mountain views outside from the observation platform at the tower’s peak are also breathtaking.
