The complex Gothic façade of the Duomo of Siena is a true masterpiece, begun in 1285 and not completed until the 14th Century. Were it not for the arrival of the Black Death shortly afterwards, the impressive duomo itself would have become the transept of a vast cathedral, which would easily have rivalled Rome’s greatest churches. The project was never completed, but the duomo holds beauty enough already in the form of outstanding examples of Renaissance Tuscan art: Matteo di Giovanni’s chilling ‘Massacre of the Innocents’, Nicola Pisano’s richly detailed octagonal pulpit and Donatello’s bronze statue of St. John the Baptist.
