A vast, imposing, modernist structure, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles has capacity for 3000 people and is a radical departure from traditional Christian religious architecture. Built in 2002 to withstand the earthquakes which destroyed its predecessor, it covers 5,000 square metres and aside from the huge, cavernous main sanctuary at ground level, it has eleven further stories. The almost abstract shapes of the exterior reveal a surprising, serene beauty inside, where the warm, sunlit polished concrete walls, sand-coloured limestone floor and cedar ceiling create a calm sanctuary for worshippers in an environment far removed from the real world.
