Music and coloured lights can be a heady mix anyway, but when you add air thick with the warm smell of cinnamon and a belly full of svařené víno (mulled wine), you have a proper recipe for a Prague Christmas party, where you’ll find people making and baking live and choirs and bands pumping. There may even be dancing if people get festive enough, but to suggest the Christmas market is akin to a club night is going a bit too far, it is a celebration though, both of the season and local seasonal traditions. The Christmas tree is a huge feature, as well as being a huge tree brought down from the Sumava mountains in the south, it’s lit beautifully against the Prague’s Gothic town square skyline and turned on each evening with a little pomp and ceremony when it gets dark. A nativity scene takes pride of second place, surrounded by a petting zoo of animals to meet, then there are the ubiquitous rows of wooden chalets or huts, lit gaily, and selling traditional gifts such as Czech glassware, handmade jewellery and candles, snuggly knitted pieces and carved wooden puppets and Christmas ornaments.
