Gouffre du Padirac

See more Caves & Caving. See best of Midi-Pyrenees in France.

If you can time it so that you avoid the crowds this would be a pretty spectacular experience - you travel around the cave by gondola seeing the underground waterfalls and slimy shimmering limestone formations of this huge underground lake system. As it is you can only do a guided tour which takes an hour and a half (part on foot part in the boats) and there is a fair chance that you’ll end up queuing. The highlight of the trip is a massive domed cave with bright clear pools, it is really pretty special. Topside it looks like a giant hole in the ground but don’t worry there is an elevator.
