Although smaller than the more well-known Postojna Caves, the Skocjan Caves are no less intriguing. The caves are reached via a short walk with guides grouping visitors depending on what language they can understand.
Try and visit the cave after rain, this is when it's meant to look its most beautiful, yet, even without water trickling over ‘the Organ’ or completely filling the gorge below the walkway, there is still lots to entice the visitor. The guide will direct you towards stalagmites and stalactites which appear to take on the appearance of people/animals/objects and let your imagination take over!
There are hundreds of steps and a bridge which elevates over the gorge below, so the walk is not for the feint-hearted. Little lights illuminate the walkway and the whole cave begins to look like something out of ‘Lord of the Rings.’ Bats live here too, you'll see them fluttering above. A funicular ride ascends, taking you back to the surface - it is a great finish to the visit.
Accommodation in the area is sparse but there are a couple of good campsites with plenty of room for tents and caravans. It's an advantage to have transport prepared as the journey to the caves is not particularly easy.
Truly an original experience which will imprint on the memory!
