Ninety percent of this cave is still developing, making it one of the most active caves in the world. There are many legends surrounding the discovery of the Caverns of Sonora, the first being associated with a hunter and his dog. The story says that a hunter was out with his dog that started to chase a racoon. The dog chased the racoon into the entrance of the cave which was very small at the time. The entrance was then covered up and forgotten about. Although this story’s validity is unclear, it is known that the caverns were professionally explored in the 1950s. The Caverns of Sonora were then opened to the public in 1960. The Crystal Palace Tour is a two mile tour of the Caverns of Sonora. This tour goes for almost two hours and takes visitors into the northern area of the cave. The northern area shows the most recent development and is still considered to be “growing.” Only two of the seven miles discovered are currently shown during the tours.
