Baradla is the largest cave in Hungary but only one of the 260 in the Aggtelek National Park. It’s so large that it’s so large that one of its chambers is called the Concert Hall and concerts have been held here. As well as being vast it is also colourful, the ceiling is red and green and the stalactites are dark. Huge ghost-like formations in pale limestone surround the walls. Stone age man once lived in these tunnels and chambers, these days you can wander through their winding and often narrow bellies for 7kms. Part of the trail has been concreted over, but part is loamy so bring your wellies. Most of the caves in the park are dripstone or sinkholes created by water wearing on limestone. An impressive 465 species of creature have been found in the caves, they thrive not only with unearthly beauty but also life.
