Aven Armand is in the Cevennes National Park near Meyrueis and is a stunning cave system with some marvellous stalactites and other rock formations including tall narrow stalagmite formations which are best described as looking like stacked fillets of plated white fish over three metres high and others which appear to drip heavy, shiny white gloop in front of your eyes. The largest cavern and the only one people can fit into is taller than Notre Dame and contains, the guides will tell you more than 400 stalagmites, the tallest of which must be almost 100 feet high. It's a slightly daring trip into the cave, down several hundred feet on a funicular railway the sensation of which is not unlike being lowered into a gaping mouth, very gently. If you don't like the sound of that don't worry it only lasts for a coupe of minutes. Make sure you pick up a guide to get measurements you can understand they're pretty impressive and worth knowing.

‘Subterranean Travels: Why I'd rather be Underground’
Caves aren't just the underground domain of the caver, the beauty of their stalactite and stalagmite covered cavern ceilings and floors are accessible to all and very photogenic.
