The Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, Yogyakarta Kraton or Yogyakarta palace is like a mini city within the larger city and has housed the regions rulers since 1756. It sits, fortress like behind inhabited walls in vast, lush grounds linked by decorated walkways and white shaded courtyards. The current monarch still lives in the kraton but artists now inhabit the outer buildings rather than servants of lesser nobles. Some of the kranton is open for the public - it’s very easy to get to, sitting as it does in the middle of Yogyakarta. Once you’re inside the complex some of the highlights are the Bangsal Sri Manganti where dances are performed, the Danapratapa Gate a blend of both Hindu and Muslim style architecture, paintings and photographs of the royal family and the room in which the ninth sultan planned his overthrow of the Dutch. Dress appropriately, meaning don’t show too much skin.
