Once protected by a huge lake retained by a fortified dam, Kenilworth withstood a very long siege by Henry III in 1266. The outer wall retains three good towers and a gatehouse facing the dam. The inner ward has impressive ruins of 14th century apartments, towers and kitchen, plus a very massive late 12th century keep with square corner towers. A second gatehouse, the stables, and an impressive domestic range by the inner ward date from the 1570s, when Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester entertained Queen Elizabeth I here.
