Built early in the 17th Century in the Dutch renaissance style from red brick and with a copper roof and comparable to Versailles in its grace and grandeur, Frederiksborg is one of Scandinavia’s most elaborate royal residences. Surrounded by a lake, the castle was built over three small islands, with covered bridges connecting the different wings and segments. Falling from royal favour the castle deteriorated over the years until in 1859 it was gutted by fire. Rebuilt afterwards in the original style, the castle was redecorated inside on the condition that it was turned into a museum and portrait gallery, the grounds now also house a national history museum.
