On an island in the middle of Copenhagen sits Christiansborg Palace, seat of Denmark’s judicial, executive and legislative powers. As well as being the country’s major centre of power the building also houses the Prime Minister’s Office, the Supreme Court, Chambers of Parliament, Royal Reception , Throne Room and a Chapel. Architecturally the palace is a fusion of Danish design through the ages, having undergone major refurbishment after two fires. The main portion of the current structure was completed in 1928 and has a white granite covered reinforced concrete shell and copper roof. The first version of Christiansborg was begun in 1733. Workmen working on the most recent build discovered the ruins of another two previous castles on the site dating from the 12th Century - neither of these was called Christiansborg, and parts of these unearthed remains are open to the public as part of a historical exhibition. Tours are available of the rest of the building and portions of it are open to the public - but you have to cover your shoes to protect the floors.
