See more Castles & Palaces. See best of Iran

Straight out of a Crusader era epic drama, Babak rises out of sheer gorges almost half a kilometre deep. It was essentially a fort, which is why the situation is so remote and difficult to get to and it’s most famous owner was Babak Korramdin who promoted an alternative religion to Islam and defended Iran against Arabian Invaders from his strong hold here. Large numbers of Iranians make their way up the treacherous pathways (2) to the castle each July to commemorate Babak Korramdim. The celebrations feature historical reading and traditional music and entertainments.

I haven’t been here but I have just finished reading a history of Babak Korramdim which included many impressive photos so I am inspired to visit.
