More than just three gorges along the Yangtze, this name has come to refer to this whole scenic region of deep cliffs and crevices, green forests and unusual karst formations. The name is spot on though, three gorges: eight kilometre long Qutang Gorge, 45 kilometre Wuxia Gorge and 66 kilometre Xiling Gorge (which actually comprises of four sub-gorges where the river flows fast and over rapids and into whirlpools.). Qutang is the most spectacular of the three, the river passing sedately through the steep, narrow channel cut between two mountains. Imagine journeying down a river between walls that are less than 150 metres across and 1,200 metres high covered in dense greenery reaching out onto the river, as it curves between mountain ridges carved gradually and gracefully in stone.
