Worth a detour

Takachiho Gorge, located on Japan's southern island of Kyushu, is a small but ultra-picturesque canyon that is famous for its beauty. The walls consist of basalt columns, the result of slow cooling of ancient lava flows. You can walk along a trail looking down into the gorge from above, or row a boat through the gorge itself. This is a favorite among photographers in Japan.
