Osuguidani translates to 'Valley of the Tall Cedars' and directly reflects the appearance of this valley region on the upper sections of the Miya River. As well as the ancient trees the area is interesting for its dozen or so dramatic waterfalls and rocky ravines. The remoteness of the valley and the rainy weather it seems to attract has protected the surrounding environment from logging and damming, and it now lies within the boarders of the Yoshino-Kumano National Park. This is one of the most famous walking areas of Japan and as well as admiring the pristine natural surroundings you can also see Mt. Fuji, one of the most popular and traditional of Japanese scenes. The best time for hiking is between April and November when the leaves are at their most colourful. There is also an area suitable for rock climbing and fishing.
