Oirase Gorge

Worth a detour

The Oirase River drains Lake Towada, Honshu's largest caldera lake, through the Oirase Gorge. The scenery here is sylvan rather than dramatic. This is a famous place in Japan to hike in autumn amid the changing colors of the leaves. Numerous waterfalls cascade down the walls of the gorge. Many haiku have been written about the peace, tranquility and beauty of Oirase Gorge.
