Another dramatic result of the volcanic activity that shaped the Yellowstone area is the brightly coloured Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This canyon is about 20 miles long and has been created by thousands of years of erosion caused by the Yellowstone River, accelerated by volcanic action in the region. The canyon's length incorporates hot springs and pools formed by the collapse of geyser basins and several spectacular waterfalls.
Although the shape of the canyon's environment is dramatic, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is best known for the bright red colour of its walls, caused by the hydrothermal reaction between the iron in the stone and the torrents of corrosive water. As well as the striking scenery, visitors to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone could meet an ofsprey, bison or moose.
