Big 5 game viewing in a malaria-free area - an ideal stop-off after touring the Garden Route If you're looking for malaria-free game viewing within reach of the Garden Route, then Shamwari is a good bet. This huge reserve of 60,000 acres north of Port Elizabeth was established in 1996 by South African entrepreneur Adrian Gardiner, on bush-studded Savannah - ideal for reintroducing once-resident species. His dream was to restore to the Eastern Cape the herds and prides decimated more than a century ago during European colonization. Since then it has grown steadily, with more and more species being carefully reintroduced, and 6 separate luxury lodges scattered at various points around the reserve. Your day starts early with a 3-hour game drive, during which you can expect to see elephant, zebra, antelopes, giraffe, raptors and, if you're lucky, lion and leopard. Pointing them out with an agreeable mix of fact, insight and humour, is a young ranger, who drives the open 6 seater Land Rover. The middle of the day is usually spent lazing by the poolside, or taking a lions nap, with a late-afternoon drive and communal dinner to round off a rewarding day. read more and book at i-escape
