There is something incredibly romantic about the idea of an traditional safari- cool canvas tents, sunset over watering holes, the huge night sky. It was indeed the 1920’s when safari’s became popular and created the base of what we call a safari today. Cottar’s 1920 Mara Safari Camp however goes right back into the golden age of the safari, and cuts out the commercialised, congested element of modern safaris. The camp is run by the Cottar family and has been for the past 80 years. The stylish camp is set on 22,000 acres of privates land, surrounded by the Maasai Mara, Serengeti and Loliondo reserves. The area boasts the biggest concentration of wildlife in Africa, and the camp itself is know for its record topping big-five sightings. The tents are traditional, with four-poster beds draped with white mosquito nets and zebra skins on the floor. The tents are also furnished only with antiques from the 1920’s. Don’t forget to pack in your khaki cottons to keep up the tradition and do be prepared to lose yourself in the vast African plains.
