Located on one of Mexico’s largest freshwater lakes, Laguna Bacalar, Villas Ecotucan is a family-friendly ecological resort, surrounded by tropical gardens and jungle. The eco-resort consists of five spacious stone cabins with thatched roofs and is nothing too fancy, but offers uncompromised tranquillity and scenery. The resort is ecologically friendly in every way possible - even the cabins are constructed exclusively of native materials such as rock and palm leaves, all locally sourced. The cabins were built between the trees and the tropical garden was integrated into the jungle, with 60 hectares of surrounding jungle being preserved. The energy used on the resort is 100 percent solar, with no air-conditioning or generators. All waste is recycled, and very little water is used, with a rainwater collection system in place.
There is an abundance of things to see and do in the area. Day trips can include a visit to the nearby Mayan ruins of Kohunlich, Dzibanche or Kinichna or to the capital of Quintana Roo, Chetunmal, to visit the markets, museums and Mayan ruins. Back at the resort, Laguna Bacalar offers many water activities, from swimming to kayaking. Walking trails allow for further exploration of the area, and a chance to see the varied bird and wildlife. Open all year.
