Swanbourne, South City Beach and City Beach join up along a long flat arch of Perth’s coastline. Their steep sand dunes flatten out to a long stretch of shallows as the beach gently scoops out to sea. Swanbourne is the most controversial, if that can be said about a strip of coastline; on army land it’s got nude bathing on the beach and a rifle firing range behind the dunes, insert joke about needing more than sunscreen to protect your privates, or about using sights to see the sights. As well as the dangers of nudists and guns there are snakes in the dunes. There’s no barrier between Swanbourne and South City Beach, which is a family beach, so it’s obviously not as dangerous as all that. Its possibly misplaced notoriety makes it one of the most famous of Perth’s beaches, especially with international visitors. Not just the nice, clean conditions and views you get all along this line of coast Swanbourne is just that bit edgier, like an Eton school boy with a catapult in his back pocket.
