Morne Rouge Beach, Grenada

See more Beaches. See best of Grenada

Grenada is famous for white-sand beaches and warm tropical seas. Grand Anse is the best known beach and many of the hotels are set right behind this two-mile crescent of sand. To the south of the beach a rocky ridge called Quarantine Point projects into the sea. I was staying at the Grand View Inn which is right on top of Quarantine Point and decided to explore in the opposite direction. Walking down to the sea I soon came to Morne Rouge beach. It's smaller than Grand Anse beach, with the same white sand and blue water, but far fewer people visit here and somehow it has a special atmosphere of its own.

Morne Rouge is backed by woodland, and shade trees grow out of the sand. People relax, reading or swimming, or just enjoying the peace and quiet. If you want to get a drink or meal there is a beach bar and restaurant at the Gem Beach Resort where you first enter the beach from the road leading down. Walk on beyond this and there is no other development, nowhere to spend money, just the sand and the waves and the trees and Grenada's soft warm tropical breezes.

I enjoyed the different moods of these two beaches. For a livelier atmosphere, Grand Anse has watersports and plenty of places to buy food and drink as well as a little market with souvenirs and local crafts. Separated only by the small rocky headland, Morne Rouge has a totally peaceful feel. It's hard to avoid slipping into cliches about “getting away from it all” , “ultimate chill-out” “recharge the batteries” because this is a spot where you really can do some serious de-stressing!
