Homely waterfront cottages run by a charming family on a small farm-island in backwater Kerala - a truly personal insight into Keralan life and cuisine

Welcome home! This is how you will be greeted after your day's shopping, boating or birdwatching on Kerala's backwaters – and it’s how you will feel. Guests at Philipkutty's Farm cottages are welcomed and cared for by several generations of the Mathew family. Even grandfather was involved: in the 1950’s he reclaimed this private island on which the farm now sits (5ft below sea level), from beneath Vembanad Lake.

They call it a 'homestay', and are delighted to show you round their 45-acre working farm of mango, nutmeg and coconut trees, their bean, pepper and banana plantations. But if you are worried about privacy, rest assured that your waterfront cottage is utterly peaceful and entirely independent (the family reside in their own house nearby). Designed by Swiss architect Karl Damschen, the cottage is an antique-filled, open-plan affair, set on the edge of a peaceful waterway and ideal for a couple with or without child.
