Yosemite's night sky

Yosemite National Park was one of the first wilderness parks in the United States, covering approximately 1,200 square miles of the Sierra Nevada in California. The park is probably best known for its waterfalls, glaciers, deep valleys and rolling meadows but far out in the wilderness away from the bright lights of cities it also provides an excellent environment for stargazing. During the summer Yosemite offers moonlit tours through the park around the full moon, and often on summer nights groups of amateur astronomers gather at Glacier Point to take advantage of the dark skies. The nights when the moon isn't full are obviously most conducive to seeing the true splendour of the stars at Yosemite and night hikes are a really fun way to get deep into the wilderness and really acclimatise to the dark. For those who prefer a bit more direction there are various guided walk and talks put on throughout the year within the park.
