The Northern Lights from Hotel Kakslauttanen
See more Astronomy. See best of Lapland in Finland.

Set in the province of Lapland in the north of Finland this extraordinary hotel is a perfectly placed gateway to night sky experiences including the graceful mystery of the aurora borealis, or northern lights, and the surreal beauty of the midnight sun. The hotel runs excursions during the months of June and July to experience the vast, untouched wilderness reflected in the light of a sun that never falls below the horizon, an eerie and awe-inspiring sight. Amongst the other traditional Lapland offerings of the hotel is the chance to stay in one of their amazing glass igloos, designed specifically with stargazing and the aurora borealis in mind. As the hotel is within the Arctic Circle the probability of seeing the lights in their peak time from late August to late April is extremely high. The Aurora are best seen here just before midnight and if the idea of watching them from the back of a reindeer sled or the top of a snow covered fell strikes you as a little too adventurous then the glass igloo's mix of comfort and the fantastical is perfect for a night in with the stars.
