The French allegedly wear hats with the most elan, and Englishwomen have a reputation for cramming them jauntily onto the backs of their heads in a less-than-chic manner. Whichever category you fall into, being able to create your very own hats (particularly ones that fit your head!) is a skill worth having if style is your passion. Once you realise how complex and individual the hat-making process can be, the impossibility of finding a good one in the shops seems much less surprising!
If the idea of making cloche, tea, straw, leather, turban, flower-decked or any other kinds of hats you can imagine for yourself and friends appeals, or even if you need the inspiration to start your own business, try spending a colourful week with some fellow mad hatters in London under the guidance of Rose Cory; she began making hats at sixteen, and has received the highest praise from 'Vogue'. She worked as a milliner to the stars and the royal family for decades, and has been responsible for the training of quite a number of the hatters regarded most highly by today’s fashion industry.
