Surrounded by Tuscany’s celebrated hill scenery, the Medieval walled town of Certaldo seems as though it has almost been designed with the visitor’s absorption of local culture and artistic tradition in mind. It has a wonderful, sun-baked piazza, evocative romanesque architecture, its own hilltop gardens and museum of religious art, and a wonderful old fresco-filled Palazzo fronted by a distinctive coat of arms in glazed terra cotta.

At La Meridiana, one of Italy’s foremost ceramics schools, you will be given the opportunity to experiment with new techniques, skills and ideas whether you have experience in the field or no. You can linger for between a few days and several months, and have as much or as little help as you need. Pick an intensive ‘workshop’ to tackle a specific skill or topic, or a ‘clay group’ for a more leisurely exploration of local culture and cuisine alongside your course.
