One of the world's most ancient health and wellbeing systems in the world, Ayurveda has achieved global recognition in recent years due to its natural and holistic approach. Ayurvedic techniques treat health from an emotional and spiritual perspective as well as a physical one, which means that each issue is seen as part of the whole individual and not simply as a problem that can be suppressed. Personality types, stress levels and individual quirks are all taken into account, which means that the pursuit of an Ayurvedic lifestyle varies from person to person. There are also strong links with the Hindu religion, so an education in Ayurvedic practice can be an exploration of Indian culture as well as of alternative therapies. It is thought that Ayurveda originated in India perhaps more than a thousand years BCE, and it is still widely embraced there today, so there is surely no better place for your first exploration of it.
The Vijnana Kala Vedi Cultural Centre in Aranmula, Kerala is one destination suited to an Ayurvedic adventure; they make aspects of traditional Indian culture available for visitors to investigate in a beautiful, natural environment. You can also learn about Indian dance and music, yoga, martial arts, cookery and crafts here, as well as exchange your English language abilities for lessons in Hindi, Sanskrit and others.
