More than 50 religious monuments make up this ‘lost city of mosques’ at Bagerhat, by the Ganges’ mouth. Designed and built under one man, the city’s unique, homogenous architecture is visible in everything from the vast, grand mosques to bridges, roads and the reservoirs. Most structures are in red brick with details imprinted into some of the bricks for decoration. Some of the most impressive monuments are the Singar Mosque, Kahn Jahan‘s tomb, the mosque of Bibi Begni and the Shatgombuj Mosque, which is the oldest mosque in Bangladesh with a roof decorated with more than seventy domes.
